Possible risks include swelling, bleeding, infection, scarring, sensory changes, asymmetry, nasal obstruction, breathing discomfort, and skin color changes. Autologous tissue may be resorbed or change shape, and pain or scarring may remain at the donor site.
Please tell us about any surgery or trauma at a cartilage donor site; nasal conditions such as rhinitis or sinusitis; breathing discomfort; previous nasal surgery, fillers, or implants; active infection; uncontrolled high blood pressure or diabetes; bleeding disorders; adverse reactions to anesthesia; possible pregnancy; smoking; and all medications and dietary supplements you take. Do not stop anticoagulants or other prescribed medication on your own; consult the clinician who prescribed them.
Contact the clinic immediately if you have a nosebleed that will not stop, suddenly worsening pain or swelling on one side, a change in nasal skin color, severe difficulty breathing, high fever, or pus. Your own tissue, such as dermis or cartilage, is used to raise the bridge and shape the tip. Creating the nasal contour entirely with your own tissue, without an artificial material, is the central principle of non-implant rhinoplasty.
Because no artificial implant is inserted, concerns such as implant visibility, movement, and contracture are reduced. Using your own tissue also reduces concern about a foreign-body sensation.
Because the amount of autologous tissue available is limited, non-implant rhinoplasty may not be suitable if you want a very high bridge. Suitability depends on your desired height and the condition of your nose and is determined after assessment during consultation.
In addition to checking nasal swelling, bleeding, and skin color, pain, wounds, and scars at cartilage or tissue donor sites must be monitored separately. The recovery schedule varies with the extent of harvesting.
We assess the remaining amount and strength of each tissue, including septal and ear cartilage, any previous harvest history, and the support required to determine which tissue to use and to what extent.
